I was very well looked after by some friends of an old college friend of mine during the Goodwood Festival of Speed, using a corner of their 16th century thatched farmhouse and treated to delicious homecooked food en famille when I got back each night – ‘just the ticket’ at the end of your day. My 25 mile commute to-and-from the Goodwood estate was split between 12 miles of roads like these and 13 miles of a dual-carriageway which runs a few miles inland along the south coast of Blighty. These roads are in the Meon Valley in Hampshire, a sparsely populated region on the edge of the South Downs (an historic band of rolling chalk countryside which stretches from Beachy Head, near Eastbourne to the Roman city of Winchester)
Story has it that not far from where these photos were taken, in a hamlet called ‘Brockbridge’, in the parish of Soberton, Sir Winston Churchill met with his War Cabinet and allied leaders, including de Gaulle, in June 1944 in a sealed train standing at the platform in Droxford Station. Here they plotted the D-Day invasion of Europe. I was told that the railway closed in 1962 but that there’s a plaque beneath the postbox to commemorate the village’s contribution to the war effort. I’ll go back sometime and take a closer look.
These are the sort of roads and the sort of evenings that were designed for riding motorbikes…
